The Elephant In The Room

My Pen Mates,
The elephant in the room is doubt. It gets in the way of everything. Past the paralyzing fear of its presence, it blocks the view, cramps the room, and the only way to get about is to turn, duck, or back out.
What sows doubt is circumstance and a core weakness in the human condition. It's like treading in a sea of events, challenges, goals, and relationships, which are continually churned and shaped by time, season, and ones own presence; every pore of your body is exposed, and life is looking for an excuse to swallow you into the abyss at the first sign of weakness. It's a constant battle between these elements and the determination not only to survive them but to prevail over their assault. And coping mechanisms are as varied as the day is long. Often I see people who find great strength in faith and surrender to a Higher Power. Sometimes it's labeled confidence, and creative entities call it teamwork.
But no matter how it's called and regardless of how it's handled, the elephant exists and never truly leaves the room. Upon waking we sometimes find that the room is much bigger making it seem like it's no bother that the elephant is there. Those are the good days. At times we integrate it into our consciousness and prop things against it to either mask it or put it to use. Then there are those days when it's all that consumes our attention and we stare, and stare, and stare.... without seeing what's there, or attempting to examine and codify our feelings towards it or develop a means to exist beyond its presence. We are depressed, in denial, triumphant, composed, helpless, or indifferent; and without budging an inch, the elephant remains......
